LPUMC MISSIONS

When asked what the greatest commandment is, Jesus answered “You must love the Lord your God” and “You must love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Matthew 22:34-40). Here at Longs Peak UMC, we are active in our local community and throughout the world.

LOCAL MISSIONS

Monthly we prepare and serve meals through the OUR Center and HOPE here in Longmont.
A crew of 7-8 volunteers is needed at the OUR Center for lunch on the second Saturday of the month, click here for more information and the sign-up sheet.
To help provide food for an evening meal at the HOPE shelter on the 29th of the month, click here for more information and the sign-up sheet.

Each month we focus on a different type of in-kind collection for a local non-profit. Past collections have benefitted partners such as the OUR Center, HOPE, the Inn Between, and the Longmont Humane Society. To stay informed about our current collection focus and other periodic or seasonal volunteer opportunities, please see the Missions section of our latest church newsletter and sign up for the LPUMC weekly emails.

NATIONAL AND GLOBAL MISSIONS

LPUMC supports a social worker, Glorie Gitonga, in Nairobi, Kenya through the Center for Health and Hope.  In addition to funding her salary through our Missions budget, we also hold an annual fundraising event for the Center for Health and Hope, such as a dinner or, most recently, a fall craft bazaar.

Special Sundays

One of the roles of the Missions Team is to coordinate LPUMC’s observation of the Special Sundays of the United Methodist Church.  Special Sundays are designated Sundays throughout the year that illustrate the nature and calling of the Church. They provide opportunities for giving towards funds which support designated churchwide ministries. Through our connectional relationship with the worldwide Church, we can do more together.

The six Special Sundays are Human Relations Sunday in January, UMCOR Sunday in March, Native American Ministries Sunday in  May, Peace with Justice Sunday in June, World Communion Sunday in October, and United Methodist Student Day in November.   On these Sundays, we empower our congregation to give toward causes and organizations that promote sustainable life change.  These offerings help reach out to the community, offer refuge in times of disaster, promote peace and justice, provide scholarships,  teach skills to encourage self-sufficiency and share the love of Jesus Christ with God’s people everywhere.

MONTHLY MISSIONS TEAM MEETING

The LPUMC Missions Team is always looking for new ways to help our congregation live out Jesus’ command.  We typically meet the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm, and all are welcome.  To find out more, become more involved, or offer ideas, please contact us at LPUMCMissions@gmail.com or call the church office and leave your name and number.
